EFRAG releases conference report celebrating its 25th anniversary

EFRAG has published the summary report of its conference “25 Years of EFRAG: Leading the Next Era of Corporate Reporting”, which took place on 8 June 2026 in Brussels. The conference brought together current and former EFRAG leaders, policymakers, standard-setters, preparers, investors and academics to reflect on EFRAG’s evolution over the past 25 years and discuss the future of corporate reporting in Europe.

The panel Reflecting on 25 Years of EFRAG: Key Milestones and Impact highlighted EFRAG’s transformation from a private-sector adviser on financial reporting into Europe’s leading corporate reporting organisation. Speakers reflected on key milestones, including the introduction of IFRS in Europe, EFRAG’s response to the 2008 financial crisis, the Maystadt governance reform, and the development of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), which established sustainability reporting as a permanent pillar of EFRAG’s work. Looking ahead, the fireside chat What's the Next Chapter for Corporate Reporting in Europe? and the panel Advancing Connectivity in Corporate Reporting: Practice and Future Direction explored how financial and sustainability reporting can become more connected, the role of artificial intelligence and digitalisation, and the challenges of providing forward-looking information while maintaining reliability and comparability. The panel Sustainability Reporting after the Omnibus: The Next Chapter for Europe examined the future of sustainability reporting following recent simplification initiatives, with speakers emphasising the need to balance usability and proportionality with investors' demand for high-quality, comparable information. The conference concluded with a keynote address by Maria Luís Albuquerque, European Commissioner for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union, who underlined the continued importance of transparency, comparability and high-quality reporting in supporting competitive and resilient European capital markets.
