13/01/2017 - EFRAG calls for candidates for its new Academic Panel

Research activities will be increasingly important in the IASB and EFRAG work plans in the coming years. The academic community can provide valuable input on many aspects of these activities.  EFRAG intends to strengthen its relationship with the academic community by setting up an Academic Panel on financial reporting and accounting and is therefore launching a call for nominations to the Panel. If you are interested, please write to us at nominations@efrag.org by 1 March 2017.

EFRAG believes that accounting research activities will have an increasingly significant role in the coming years, reflecting a growing consensus that financial reporting should be based on a firm foundation of evidence. Academic input will be extremely valuable to support EFRAG’s efforts in influencing developments in financial reporting issues from a European perspective. EFRAG already benefits from the expertise of various highly-accomplished academic experts and now intends to deepen its collaboration with the academic community by setting up an Academic Panel.

The objective of the Panel, which supports EFRAG’s Technical Expert Group (EFRAG TEG) is to contribute to the debate on current relevant topics by:

• Assisting in the definition of a clear scope for EFRAG Research projects (information on EFRAG’s research programme can be found here);
• Making suggestions on the appropriate methodology;
• Providing input to EFRAG TEG discussions on the perceived issues and possible solutions (both on IASB and EFRAG Research projects).

On occasions, EFRAG could issue calls for literature reviews or outsource parts of its Research projects. The Academic Panel members will be asked to review the public calls, including the research question, where appropriate provide their input on the applications received and be involved in reviewing the resulting papers.

• The Panel is expected to have 10 – 15 members;
• The Panel is expected to meet in person twice a year, with the possibility to have more meetings via conference calls  and email exchange;
• It is expected that one Panel meeting will take place in Brussels and one other meeting in conjunction with a major academic event in Europe;
• Members of the EFRAG Academic Panel should be academics specialising in accounting and (financial) reporting and notably in IFRS issues and knowledgeable in European specificities;
• Appointments are personal, no substitute is allowed;
• EFRAG will cover the travel expenses for the Brussels meetings (the meetings will be organised so as to enable most members to travel to and from Brussels on the same day) and the additional costs for a meeting related to an academic event.

The selection of members will respect a geographical balance.

Applications: Nominations can be sent by the candidates themselves or by organisations on their behalf.  If you wish to nominate someone or yourself, please submit to EFRAG a covering letter indicating the areas of financial reporting in which you specialise, teach and publish papers, your CV and a list of publications no later than 1 March 2017 at nominations@efrag.org

About EFRAG: EFRAG’s mission is to serve the European public interest by developing and promoting European views in the field of financial reporting and ensuring these views are properly considered in the IASB standard-setting process and in related international debates. EFRAG ultimately provides advice to the European Commission on whether newly issued or revised IFRS meet the criteria in the IAS Regulation for endorsement for use in the EU, including whether endorsement would be conducive to the European public good.

EFRAG seeks input from all stakeholders, and obtains evidence about specific European circumstances, throughout the standard-setting process and in providing our endorsement advice. Our legitimacy is built on transparency, governance, due process (which may include field tests, impact analyses and outreaches), public accountability and thought leadership. This enables EFRAG to speak convincingly, clearly and consistently, and be recognised as the European Voice in financial reporting.
